Keywords: Hemodialysis, homocysteine, adenosine deaminase, ceruloplasmin oxidase, copper, zinc

Objective: In this study in which the purpose was to investigate the effect of hemodialysis treatment on cardiac markers and trace elements, serum copper, zinc, homocysteine and lipoprotein (a) levels and ceruloplasmin oxidase and adenosine deaminase activities and compared all parameters with each other and with rutine biochemical parameters.

Materials and Methods: We recruited 33 hemodialysis patients (HD group) and 20 healthy volunteers (control group). Blood samples were collected from hemodialysis patients before hemodialysis and from healthy controls. Rutin biochemical parameters and serum copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), homocysteine (Hcy) and lipoprotein (a) {Lp(a)] levels and ceruloplasmin oxidase and adenosine deaminase (ADA) activities were measured in serum samples of both groups.

Results: In HD group, serum lipoprotein (a) and HDL-cholesterol levels increased compared with the control group. Although serum LDL-cholesterol, ceruloplasmin oxidase, albumin, zinc, folic acid, vitamin B 12 levels and adenosine deaminase activities were lower than controls. Copper levels were not different than controls. In addition, positive correlation between serum homocysteine and creatinine, between adenosine deaminase and zinc, and negative correlation between homocysteine and ceruloplasmin oxidase and between ceruloplasmin oxidase and LDL-cholesterol levels.

Conclusion: As a result of this study, we showed that serum Hcy, Lp(a), copper levels and ceruloplasmin oxidase activity, in addition to HDL, LDL-cholesterol levels in determining the cardiovascular risk and ADA activity and serum zinc levels in following the immune deficiency condition in hemodialysis patients, may be useful parameters. These parameters may guide to determine the treatment protocols of hemodialysis patients.
