Keywords: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, Westergren, TEST-1 |
Aim: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate is useful for diagnosis and follow up of diseases such as infections, inflamm atory diseases, traumatologic disorders and several cancer types. In this study, we compared ESR results of classical Westergren method and Test-1 analyser which is new equipment.
Materials and Methods: One hundred and fifty three patients were included in the study. Venous blood samples were collected in two different tubes which contain EDTA (2 mg/ml blood) and citrate (3.5 mg/ml blood). Erythrocyte sedimentation rate of samples were analysed by both Westergren method and Test-1 analyser. In addition to these, haematocrit levels were dete rmined in samples with EDTA.
Results and Conclusion: The median and quartiles values of erythrocyte sedimentation rate were 15 [7.75-24] mm/h by Westergen method and 13 [5-22.5] mm/h by Test-1. There was a statistical correlation (r = 0.90, 95% CI 0.85 - 0.92; y = 1.002 x + 1.99) between both methods. The effect of haematocrit levels was similar in these methods.
We concluded that Test-1 analyser may be a suitable method for routine biochemistry laboratory when easy application and cost are considered.
