Keywords: Maternal serum screening tests, Prenatal diagnosis, Reference values |
Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the median values of the triple test screening
parameters in pregnancy in Bingöl region, and to compare the median values determined for the
currently used programs and some other provinces.
Material and Methods: In this study, serum markers values of 480 singleton pregnant women who
admitted to our biochemistry laboratory for the prenatal triple test was evaluated between December
2014-February 2016. Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), unconjugated estriol (uE3), beta-human chorionic
gonadotrophin (Β-hCG) for triple test were investigated retrospectively. The new calculated medians of
the Bingöl region, the medians of the other regions and the existing computer program’s medians were
evaluated statistically. The Sign Test for Median analysis was performed for this purpose.
Results: As a result; it was found that the median of AFP values in the 18th week were significantly
lower than the program’s median (p=0,0219). The medians of uE3 values in the 15-19th weeks were
significantly lower than the program’s medians (p<0,0001). Between the medians of Β-HCG values and
the program’s medians there were no significant difference for each week (p>0.05). In statistical
comparisons with other regions there was no significant difference.
Conclusion: The screening test performances will be affected by using the regional median values as in
former studies. Using regional median values can reduce the need for invasive procedures like
amniocentesis which carries risks for both mother and fetus. Therefore, determinining regional median
values is a necessity rather than recommendation to increase the predictive power more effeciently and
powerfully.
