Keywords: Vitamin D; lipid profile; HbA1c; cardiovascular risk |
Objective: In addition to important roles of vitamin D on regulation of bone and mineral metabolism,
recent studies have shown that Vitamin D is necessary for many biological actions. The aim of this study
was to determine whether Vit D levels have any effects on lipid profile and HbA1c levels in adults who
admitted to Kayseri Training and Research Hospital.
Materials and Methods: Five-hundred sixteen individuals who admitted to Kayseri Training and
Research Hospital and have simultaneous Vit D, lipid profile, HbA1c and glucose requests between 2014 and 2015 were enrolled into this retrospective study. Vit D status was categorized as <20, 20-29, and
≥30 ng/mL, which are the cut-off points for deficiency, insufficiency and normal values. Lipid profiles,
HbA1c and fasting blood glucose levels were compared according to the vitamin D status.
Results: There was no significant difference with respect to HbA1c, fasting blood glucose, triglyceride
and HDL cholesterol levels between groups (p>0.05). There were significant differences between total
and LDL cholesterol levels and total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratios of three groups (p<0.001).
Significant negative correlations were determined between Vit D and total, LDL cholesterol and total
cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio (p<0.001).
Conclusion: In conclusion, Vit D deficiency which is a common health problem worldwide has
unfavorable effects especially on total and LDL cholesterol levels.
