Adipose tissue which is currently considered as an endocrine organ produces several bioactive factors named as adipocytokines. Adipocytokines, apart from their local effects in adipose tissue may produce effects in distant organs through systemic circulation. Visfatin is a newly discovered adipocytokine and has recently become an important research subject due to its potential effects. Visfatin and its effects were summarized in the present review.
