The direct link between cardiovascular disease and plasma cholesterol levels has been clearly
described. Therapeutic interventions for lowering plasma cholesterol levels have a great significance
in prevention of cardiovascular diseases. In enterocytes, numerous transport molecules in charge of
cholesterol absorption are defined. These are; fatty acid translocase /cluster determinant 36
(FAT/CD36), scavenger receptor class B type 1 (SR-B1), Nieman Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1), ATP Binding
Cassette transporter family (ABCA1,ABCB1,ABCG5/ABCG8), caveolin-1(CAV1) and annexin-2 (ANXA2).
Studies highlighting functional aspects and metabolic regulations of intestinal cholesterol transport
proteins may reveal new strategies in preventing and/or therapeutic interventions for cardiovascular
and cerebrovascular diseases. In this review, recent experimental and clinical information on
intestinal cholesterol transport proteins have been summarized.
