Clinical laboratory personnel, by the nature of the work they perform, are exposed daily to a variety of real or potential biologic, chemical and mechanical hazards. There are many aspects to the safe operation of a clinical laboratory, including a safety program, various mandated plans (e.g. Chemical Hygiene and Bloodborne Pathogens plans) and identification of various hazards such as chemical, fire, electrical and biological. Laboratory safety necessitates the effective control of all hazards that exist in the clinical laboratory at any time as well as the awareness of and also understanding of safe work practices by the employees. Briefly, safety management in the clinical laboratory should start with a written safety policy and the recognation of above mentioned hazards and maintain through the continual application of good laboratory technique.
